LANCASHIRE FAMILY
HISTORY AND HERALDRY SOCIETY
Rossendale Branch
Newsletter April 1998
HEIRLOOM EVENING.
I hope you have all remembered to go to the bank, bookshelves or attic
to find your "heirlooms" for tonight’s meeting. I have brought along three
albums of photographs which Jackie Ramsbottom recently rescued from a tip.
The photographs are clearly of the same family from the 1930s - the early
1950s, many were take by a Haslingden photographer, none of them have been
labelled. Jackie wants to know if you recognise anyone in the photographs.
It is sad to think that they are unwanted. I hope you will all learn from
this. Go home and write in your album the full names of your children and
grandchildren and of course yourselves "Me at Margate" won’t do!
The LFHHS One Day Conference and AGM will be held on Saturday 9th May
at the University of Central Lancashire, Corporation Street, Preston.
10.00am-5.00pm.
Now I know you all received a booking form and I also know that you
have all ignored it. It would be nice to see Rossendale represented by
more than the same two or three of us. There are exhibitions, bookstalls
and microfiche on display. You will have an opportunity to meet
enthusiasts from all the other groups, all willing to answer any
questions. There are two excellent speakers this year and in spite of the
business side of things I have always found it to be an excellent day out.
Bury Branch Meetings. Please note that due to circumstances beyond
their control the Bury Group are unable to meet in their usual rooms at
the Wylde. As a temporary measure their next two meetings April & May will
be held at the Central Methodist Church. Access to the church is via
Crompton Street , first turning right off The Rock.
Branch Library. We have had a recent acquisition "Burials in the
Chapelry of Edenfield, 1813-1839" compiled by Amos Taylor. Our thanks to
Amos for all his hard work in indexing various sections of the Edenfield
registers. Some other extracts are available on microfiche in our library
holdings.
Reference Books.
Finding Folk. 2nd ed. now available £8.00 if you call at the R.O.
£11.80 by post.
it includes all new deposits of original registers MIs and indexes to
registers. a comprehensive guide which lists their holdings of Anglican,
RC & Non Conformist registers. It also includes information on probate
records marriage bonds cemetery records & census returns.
Silver Jubilee Celebrations. 9th August 1998 at the Lowther Pavillion,
St. Annes. The Society’s Exhibition Sub Committee is hard at work making
preparations for this event. We would welcome any help you are able to
give. Do you have display expertise? Do you have an interesting Family
Tree (in presentable form) or a related interest which would make a good
display on our stall? It has been suggested that we deal with enquiries on
the 1881 census or the IGI, or possibly do a display of old deeds. Can you
help on the day?
Churchyard Vandals? If you have visited any of the local churchyards
recently you will have discovered that someone has pushed over many of the
tombstones especially it seems those shaped like crosses. This apparent
vandalism has been perpetrated by Council officials who claim that the
gravestones were unsafe. It follows the tragic death of a child in
Burnley. However it is causing distress to families whose stones have been
destroyed and it makes it more difficult for those of us wishing to
transcribe the stones.
Beware of Oral History. I recently received a letter from Canada from a
man who had been told that his grandmother had attended the " West Leon"
Methodist Chapel in Burnley. Think about it.....
Table of Parochial Fees. Prepared by Church Commissioners. For one hour
(inclusive of one copy in certain registers) £12.00 For each subsequent
hour or part of an hour £10.00 Additional copies of entries £12.00.
Rossendale Ancestry. Mr Chris Mitchell has written to me from
Australia. His grandmother was married at Longholme Methodist Church in
January 1861. Her name was Elizabeth Trippier and her father was James
Trippier a Mill Manager. Her address was given as Pipping Bank, Bacup.
Elizabeth was born about 1841 but he can’t find an entry in the CRO
indexes. He has checked the BTs for Newchurch and says he has also checked
the 1851 census for Newchurch Township. He is also interested in the
origin of the name and wonders if there is a French connection. Can anyone
help? I will be happy to pass on any information.
