Our Programme for 2001
LAST MONTH: David Fitzpatrick was again, unable to give
us his talk on the History of Calderstones Hospital and Graveyard.
We would like to give our sincere thanks to Mary
Davison, who stepped in at an hour’s notice, to show us her slides of
Antarctica. She even managed to find a local connection. It would appear
that, Lieutenant Royds, one of the men who accompanied Shackleton, on his
expedition, was a Rochdale man.-
May 2nd - Violet’s story, part 2. by Denise North.
Denise purchased a box of old postcards at a car boot

the fascinating story of Violet, her friends and relatives. In this second
instalment she will expand the story, by giving details of her researches.

Rossendale Ancestry:
Recent enquiries have included:
(1) HAWORTH/HEYWORTH Ann Stocker is seeking a birth
certificate for Ann Haworth born c1860. In 1881 she was living with her
uncle Thomas Haworth aged 37 at Rose Vale Terrace, Higher Booth. Her
parents were William & Alice Haworth. She was born at Newchurch.
Mrs Stoker had purchased 2 incorrect certificates which
she will give to any interested party. These are for Ann born 9th October
1860, parents Dennis & Mary Jane, and Ann born 17 February 1858, parents
William and Mary. Both are "of Bacup." email stocker@crowham.freeserve.co.uk
(2) HAWORTH/MADEN/DOBSON Alison Grimshaw was born at
Waterfoot. Both her parents were Madens. She says she has a quantity of
family papers which she is now busy sorting out. She has a handwritten
account book which belonged to Robert Haworth of Holt Mill. This book
gives detailed accounts of ‘John Haworth with Robert and James Haworth’
including a work breakdown for the cost of "two double houses erected at
Scout belonging to the Society of Independent Oddfellows, Newchurch." It
gives the names of all their workmen, their labour contribution and costs.
There is an entry for John Haworth, a blacksmith who was paid £4 1s 9d 3/4
Further on, there is a reference to the death of John Haworth "1846, April
7th, died at Shawclough, very suddenly, at 1 1/2 o’clock, very suddenly in
the Fire Hole."
James Haworth was married 27/7/1845 to Martha Dobson,
their eldest daughter Margaret Jane married Walter Bradley Maden, Mrs
Grimshaws ancestor on her father’s side. She does not know how James was
related to John and Robert Haworth. Email

SECRETARY’S REPORT April 2001
Branch meetings continue to be well attended. New
members and visitors are always made welcome. The Programme continues to
be varied, interesting, and even educational. The web site has been a
welcome addition to the services we are able to offer to members. We have
been able to put Rossendale on the world map and I know this has been much
appreciated. Wilf must be congratulated for all his hard work in this
respect.
One result of this advertising, has been an increase in
inquiries from outside Rossendale. I feel that this interest will continue
to grow and I am grateful to those of you who have helped to answer some
of these queries.
The "Rossendale Ancestry" column in the newsletter has
proved very popular. I would however, appreciate more input with articles.
If you come across an item of interest, whilst doing your local research,
don’t hesitate to pass it on. The newsletter is now published on our web
site, so it is not just for the benefit of those attending Rossendale
Branch meetings.
Once again, my thanks to Kathleen Ashburner for
photocopying the newsletter.
PROJECTS REPORT- Michael Hiluta and Wilf Day.
Wilf says....
-
All Saints’ Goodshaw, Baptisms, 1900 - 1999.
Completed. This is currently being bound in hard back at Rawtenstall
Library. Unfortunately we have been refused permission to microfiche
this work.
-
All Saints’ Goodshaw, Baptisms 1684 - 1899. is being
transcribed.
-
All Saints’ Goodshaw, Monumental Inscriptions. Work
will continue on this project later in the year.
-
The 1891 census index for the Rossendale area is
ready for binding.
-
The web site is still taking up quite a bit of time.
I am trying to put a short history with each church photo. I have done
16 out of 70 so far. Is anyone willing to help?
-
I have made a transcript of the names on the WW1
memorial in Rawtenstall cemetery and I am hoping to put this on the web
site in the near future.
Michael Says....
I have taken advantage of coffee mornings to look
through the marriage registers of several churches.
-
On Wednesday 10 -12 noon I have visited St. Mary’s
Rawtenstall. Entries start 1878. Thanks to the Rev. David Parker.
-
I have also started to transcribe the marriages at
St. Anne’s, Edgeside (Waterfoot) on Tuesdays 9 - 11am. Entries commence
1887. My thanks to the Verger John Greenwood. I now need someone to put
this information on to computer.
-
My thanks also to Ralph Ward, Minister of Newchurch
Methodist Church. He has allowed me to look through marriages between 6
- 8 p.m. on Thursday evenings, whilst he holds a children’s class.
Marriages start in 1873.
-
A burial index for Rawtenstall cemetery is being
compiled. The first burial (of 21,000) commenced 9th January 1877. Anyone interested in doing the cemetery MIs?
