Our Families. Our January workshop will be devoted to examples of the work which members have been undertaking. We would like you to bring your charts and your indexes or other examples of your research work. It will be particularly interesting to see the different methods which members have chosen to display their work. When we had the Roadshow at Rawtenstall several members were surprised to find that they had family links. Small charts were given out last month. If you didn’t receive one please pick one up tonight.

Profile on Dennis Nuttall......

Due to ill health Dennis not able to come to meetings but he can be found most afternoons in Rawtenstall library indexing on behalf of the Society. He has worked on name indexes for Rossendale from the 1861, 1871 and 1891. Currently he is doing a name index for Accrington in 1891. If anyone needs any advise on the Rossendale area, Dennis is the man to ask.

Dennis has also done a great deal of work on his own family tree. He has traced his Nuttalls in Higher Booths & Burnley back to 1770. His chart was on display at our recent Rawtenstall exhibition. His other name interests are Cunliffe from Altham & Burnley. These he has traced back to the late 1790s. With the unusual name of Blenkirons in N. Yorkshire he is back to 1633. Pomroys he has been able to trace from Cornwall to Burnley. Thanks to a printed tree he can go back to the time of William I.

Rossendale Ancestry & Queries

J. Edwy Harling 15 Whackhouse Lane, Yeadon, Leeds, LS19 7LY is seeking information on the family of Joseph Harling who came to Rossendale about 1850. Other names he has (from family papers) -Whittaker (Joseph’s wife), Stopforth (paternal grandmother), Tattersall (mother).

News from the Executive Committee.

Ted Palentine and Jim Topping have both indicated that they would like to stand down from their jobs as respectively Membership Secretary and Treasurer of the Society. These are very important posts. If you are interested in undertaking either job, full training will be given and you would be able to work alongside the current post holder for several months as an assistant. If you have clerical abilities and a lot of time to spare you should contact the relevant officer for more details. Phone numbers are in the journal.

New Publications. It is being proposed that copies of new publications be sent to each Branch on a Sale or Return basis. It is hoped that this will help to boost branch income. As you know this branch does not have a monthly raffle so we are dependent on Book Sales and Catering money to get a small income to pay for speakers and to purchase books and materials for the branch.

Library Boxes. Several years ago we had a system whereby the journals of other societies were sent to branches for 6 month periods and then were exchanged for others. This was especially useful for members with ancestors outside Lancashire.

I have been asked to find out whether you would like this system revived. I will take your views in January.
