Book Review
The Water-Spinners. A new look at the early cotton
trade.
Chris Aspin has spent more than 14 years on this book;
much of the information in its 496 pages is from previously unpublished
material.
The author has located the sites of 200 Arkwright type
mills. He discusses the development of the machines and looks at the early
cotton trade from many vantage points.
The spinners of the title include Sir Richard Arkwright
and his many followers and also those many thousands who laboured in the
new factories. Much of the new material describes the lives of the pauper
apprentices, who were taken by the mill masters of the North from
workhouses in London and other parts of the country.
Hardback copies are £33.50 plus £5.00 p&p
Paperback copies are £24.95 plus £4.00 p&p

LORD/ SUTCLIFFE/ GREENWOOD
Pauline Barnes has found a
Family Bible, in a box of books; she is moving from Wrexham to
South Wales in the near future and would like to pass the Bible on to
anyone with an interest in the family.
A signature at the front of the Bible says "William
Lord of Underbank". It is dated October 1851. Pauline says this is
probably the same William Lord who was born July 13 1820, son of Richard
and Ann Lord of Cloughfold. He married Rachel Sutcliffe on October 29 1850
at Cloughfold Chapel. Rachel was the daughter of George and Rachel
Sutcliffe of Newchurch Road, Bacup. They had sons John, William and George
Lord. George married Martha Ann Greenwood in Todmorden although her
parents lived in Bacup. Their first child Rachel was born in Didsbury, the
family then moved to London. The last entry is for Rachel Lord who died in
1940 as a result of enemy air action.
I have located this Lord family on the 1881 census.
William Lord had died. His widow Rachel was living at 2 Goose Hill,
Newchurch. She was a dressmaker aged 52, born in Halifax. She had two sons
living with her, Thomas aged 23, an unemployed grocer’s clerk and George
aged 19, an accountant’s clerk.
If you think you have a connection with this family
please let me know and I will put you in contact with Pauline Barnes.
HOUGHTON/ SCOTT/ WHITTAKER/ LORD
Maureen Roberts (member No 7728) writes "I began my
search into the Scott family over three years after being given a
photograph of a man named Emmanuel Scott. It was thought that he was my
great grandfather. Curiosity led me to confirm this and then search
further back. Never having done anything like this and being computer
illiterate, it was slow progress until I discovered "Haslingden Roots" and
this led to contact with the LFHHS.
With a tremendous amount of help from various members
of these groups I was able to trace back the Scott line to George, born
about 1745. I was unable to find out little about George other than his
marriage to Ann Houghton. I have since managed to trace back to Ann’s
grandfather John Houghton, yeoman of Haslingden born about 1681. He
married Elizabeth Hoyle in 1703. Their son Giles was the father of Ann.
I have traced many descendants of George and Ann Scott.
My 3X grandfather was John who married Margaret Whittaker in 1913.
Margaret died in 1839 but I can not find anything further about John
Scott.
I would like to hear from any member working on the
Houghton, Scott or Benson family (from Kirby Malham)
The Scotts were staunch Methodists and in latter
generations Emmanuel was a lay preacher. His eldest son George married
Mary Hannah Lord, daughter of the first Mayor of Rawtenstall. They lived
at Cowpe until George’s death in 1951".

1901 Census RG13/3852 - Part of Bacup -
missing page.
I recently purchased the Lancashire 1901 census from S
& N British Data Archive Service. I realised there was a page missing from
RG/3852. I notified S&N and they very quickly replaced the CD. However, as
it was the final page in this registration area, it is possible that any
of you trawling through Bacup for a missing ancestor may not have noticed
the omission.
For your benefit, I am listing the missing information:
