Our talk on making a will?
Leslie Norris, a solicitor in
the Ramsbottom area. took a light-hearted view of a serious
subject. He told us how he drifted into this line of work. His
father wanted him to be an architect. He wanted to be an actor.
He eventually found his niche specialising in wills. He told us
about some of the odd requests he had received and some of his
more eccentric clients . He described some of the pitfalls of
making your own will and explained why a four foot wide desk was
sometimes a necessity, when disappointed family members came to
blows.

GREENHAUGH /ASHWORTH /
WADDINGTON / NEWMAN / MERCER
Sarah Tonks Member no 8218
writes:
I'm looking for information on
three generations of Greenhaughs in Newchurch / Bacup:
GEORGE GREENHAUGH - born c
1865 in Bacup; married Elizabeth Ashworth (born c1866, daughter
of Thomas Ashworth and Alice, nee Waddington) at St John's
Church, Bacup, on 17 August 1889; moved to Spotland Road,
Rochdale, in the 1890s
CHARLES GREENHAUGH - born
c1841. Place of birth given in different census returns as Bacup
Hollingworth, and Littleborough. Married Alice Newman (born 28
July 1841 at Irnell Springs, daughter of Edmund Newman and Alice
nee Mercer) on 7 April 1861 at the Haslingden Register Office.
At the time of the 1881 census, Charles and Alice lived at the
Queen Hotel, 12 Doorstones, Newchurch with their children George
(see above), Mary Jane, Nancy, Fanny and Elizabeth
GEORGE GREENHAUGH - born
c1807, Low Moor, Yorkshire. Married to Nancy (born c 1811). In
the 1861 census (taken on the same day as his son Charles'
wedding) George and Nancy were shown as living at the "White
Horse", 6 Yorkshire Street, in the parish of Christchurch,
Newchurch. George's occupation is given in the census as
"beerhouse keeper", although Charles' marriage certificate gives
George's occupation as coalminer.
Does anyone have any more information on the Greenhaughs or
their relations? Does anyone have information relating to the
Angel Inn (10 Yorkshire Street), the White Horse (6 Yorkshire
Street) or the Queen Hotel (12 Doorstones)? I'm not based near
Newchurch, so I'd be interested in any information on Yorkshire
Street or Doorstones in general.
Many thanks.
Please could any response be
addressed to me at sarah_tonksie@hotmail.com, or Sarah Tonks, 75

New Television Series
1. Are you related to
Royalty?
Do you have reason to believe
you have blue blood? Could you be related to a Duke, Earl or
even a King or Queen?
Shine, a leading independent television production company is
looking for volunteers to take part in a new primetime series
that hopes to verify the true royal connections of everyday
people. If you think that you may be descended from royalty
please contact Shine at: traceyourorigins@yahoo.co.uk
New Television Series 2. W.W.I in Britain
A new TV series has been
commissioned that focuses on the impact of the 1st World War on
communities in Britain. The production Company, Wall to Wall
(producers of Who Do You Think You Are) want to examine the
lives of those affected by the conflict by looking at war
memorials, not just those of the armed forces, but including
nurses and civilians killed during the war.
However, case studies are
urgently required, and Wall to Wall would be keen to hear from
family historians and volunteers who have come across inspiring
stories in their research, to complement Wall to Wall's own
research (led by Nick Barratt). Any contributions should be sent
to alexfinch@walltowall.co.uk
As part of the programme strand, the broadcaster is looking to
create an online directory of war memorials and those
commemorated on them, consolidating and complimenting existing
information, providing an invaluable resource for all family
historians in the future.
The Lancashire Registration
District
The Lancashire Registration
District was created on 23rd May 2005 by the merger of the
following Registration Districts:
Burnley and Pendle; Chorley; Fleetwood & Fylde; Hyndburn and
Rossendale; Lancaster; Preston & South Ribble; Ribble Valley;
West Lancashire.
Records from the old Preston,
Fleetwood & Fylde and Ribble Valley Offices have moved into the
new building and during the summer months the Indexes and
Registers from the other offices will be moved to Preston. All
events registered after the above date will be registered as the
Lancashire District. For the purposes of family history research
the original reference number and the ‘old’ district names will
be retained.
As registers are moved the new address will appear on the
application form on the Lancashire BMD website
www.lancashirebmd.org.uk
During the move it is possible
that there may be a delay in issuing certificates but the
registration staff will endeavour to keep this to a minimum.
