Our Out Visit-extra on Sunday 19th September. Our trip
round Grane was combined with a tour of the Water Treatment Centre. In
addition "Haslingden Roots" had put on a display depicting the history of
Grane and were on hand to answer enquiries from a range of records
covering the Haslingden area. The walk started off well. We were half way
round when the rains came. We were absolutely drenched. Kathleen Ashburner
is thinking of hiring out the Group to do rain dancing next time we have a
drought!
The Poor Law Migrants.
I have had several enquiries regarding the migration
scheme 1835 - 1837. Ken Inman has left some notes containing brief
biographies of families who moved to Rossendale. I have given a copy of
this to Winifred Belcher to put into the library.
Information from a Bible
I have had a letter from a lady in Suffolk who spotted
a Bible in a charity shop window. Inside the front cover was a Church
order of service dated 6th May 1877 for St. Mary’s Rawtenstall. As the
Bible was priced at £50 she was only able to make a note of the names
inside. These were as follows:
Laurence Eastwood 17.3.1829 Sarah Ann Eastwood
18.7.1861
Margaret Eastwood 26.2.1829 Mary Ann Eastwood 15.1.1867
John Thomas Eastwood 8.4.1854 Joseph Eastwood 22.7.1849
d.1850
Eliza Eastwood 18.4.1857 Sagar Eastwood My 1853 d. 1853
Harriet Eastwood 14.6.1859
Eric John Percy Crawford Lombard Knight 27.8.1917 d.
23.4.1987
Anthony Charles Eric Lombard Knight 25.8. 1951
Diana Lombard Knight 16.5.1950
D. Elizabeth Lombard Knight d. 16.5.1999
The Eastwood family originated in Ramsbottom. They were
living at Newhall Hey, Cowpe Lenches in 1881. The Lombard Knight family
seem to be an interesting lot. I couldn’t find them in 1881 in Lancashire
or Suffolk. There seems to be a missing link. It was probably Diana who
married into that family The nearest I could find in the Suffolk 1881
census was a C. Percy Lombard aged 9 living at The Hall, Assington,
Suffolk aged 9, He was half brother to Philip Gurdon Esq. J.P. aged 23,
Head. His father was Francis Lombard J.P. aged 50, and his mother was
Sophie aged 44. If this is correct it is a big jump for a Beer dealers
family.
Coming Events. Talks, Conferences, Exhibitions.
Friday 15 October. The LFH&HS’s annual dinner will this year be hosted by the Lancaster and Morecambe
Group. A special evening of "Lancashire fare" will be held at the
Clarendon Hotel, Marine Road West, Morecambe.
***The after dinner speaker will be Ian Dewhurst. This
event costs only £10. It is worth that amount alone just to hear Ian
Dewhurst speak! I am told that on this particular evening
"clogs, shawls, waistcoats and flat caps will certainly
not be out of place."
Saturday 30 October 1999 NW Group Family History Fair (previously known as the Stockport Fair) will this year be
held at the Guild Hall, Preston.
There is an on site car park, refreshments & licensed
bar available. Admission is £1.50. Children free if accompanied. There
will be a large variety of stalls including many out of county FHS, book
stalls, computer studies, photo restorers and representatives from various
record offices. The Federation of Family History Societies will have an
