No more Spinsters?
According to a recent edition of "The Times" the
Registrar General of England and Wales proposes to change the way marriage
certificates are completed. A newly married person previously described as
"spinster" or "bachelor" will in future be described as "single". Divorced
men and women will continue to be described appropriately, as presumably
will be widows and widowers.
This will be effective from December 5th when the new
Civil Partnership Act becomes law, as part of the Government’s reforms to
bring marriage law into line with the Act.

The Most Amazing Names in Britain
A specialist development team at Granada Television is
currently developing a programme proposal about the most amazing names in
Britain. They are looking for surnames that tell an amazing story - the
surname might be 900 years old, one descendent may have been part of the
aristocracy and one may have been a farmhand or the current holder could
be 2000th in line to the throne or perhaps they are the last known holder
of a specific surname....
